Battle Of The Edges – Video Game Review

Battle Of The Edges – Video Game Review

Battle of the Edges is a simple reaction based neon shiny game of a thing where you play as a square in a square with three other bot squares contained within other squares. You’re trying to influence your square to hit the corners by moving the square slightly in a direction as it bounces around. You’re stopped from continually pressing buttons so you’re not in complete control. Look on it as a gentle kind of nudge. If you look at the screen shots you’ll get the right idea. Occasionally there will be power ups that will appear that will make you bounce around like you’ve had a blue Haribo, or you’ll freeze your opponents. Once you get to the end of the time then you’ll get points based on the number of times you managed to bounce into the corners. If you score enough points then you’ll win and you have a chance to unlock different coloured skins as you progress through the game. As a production, its pretty much bare assed minimum.

It’s missing stick control, and a way to exit the game without force closing through the Steam Deck itself. Don’t get me wrong, it runs with absolutely no issues at all. It’s like a concept of a game. I was kind of expecting more as I played more. I guess I’m used to playing games like Ball X Pit and Slots and Dagger to expect unlocks and editions to the gameplay. Battle of the Edges doesn’t offer that. I think it needs more. different shapes to battle in, or a map where the little squares are all in the same box and fighting each other to reach the corners. It’s not bad at what it does, but that is only because it doesn’t do very much. There’s obviously been time spent on it and it certainly has that olde neon buzz. I’m not really convinced it is much more than a base level offering that you’ll buy, play a couple of times and then be disappointed because it could have been so much more, and it really isn’t that. Compared to what you can get if you spend slightly more money. It is unfortunately difficult to recommend buying this unless you’re looking for the base level of gameplay. Shame really. It’s like getting one bowl of food in a Tapas bar and told that’s your lot. It should be Battle of the Corners. Just saying..

This review is based on the retail version of the game provided to us by the designer and publisher. We were not paid monetary compensation for this review. We give a general overview of the gameplay and so not all of the mechanical aspects of the game may be mentioned. Videogames are strange because the act of playing them will often cement if you want to keep playing them further. So we normally give a video game the benefit of the doubt and keep playing until we get an idea of what the game offers. Some games will not require a huge written piece to describe what they do and how they made us feel about them. We understand that behind every game is someone who has dedicated time, effort and money and so we'll often tell you about things that didn't gel with us instead of trashing someone's hard work. We hope this write up gives you an idea of whether or not this game is something that you will consider playing or even add to your collection. Even if we don't like something, hopefully it helps you to decide if it is something that you should find out more about. We always suggest you check out a gameplay video to give you a better understanding of the game as it is played.
